This week we got our assignments and groups for the E Center projects. I was overjoyed. I get to be working with Rfinity on social media marketing. Although I signed a non-disclosure form, I better find out exactly what I can and cannot explain here in this blog.
1. Tasks completed---what did you do?
So to help myself and Rfinity, I went out on a search for the top social networks and signed up for them. This took longer than I was expecting. First thing I did was to find a top listing. I found the top ten of 2010.So in order they ranked as such, and what I had to do on each.
1. Facebook - nothing, I was already signed up.
2. Myspace - same as facebook.
3. Bebo - same as facebook.
4. Friendster - register, confirm email, upload picture and find friends.
5. Hi5 - same as Friendster.
6. Orkut - same as facebook.
7. Perfspot - never heard of this one, same as friendster.
8. Yahoo 360 - never really heard of this either, but same as facebook. I had created profiles with my yahoo accoutn before they went social.
9. Zorpia - never heard of this one, same as friendster.
10. Netlog - never heard of this one, same as friendster.
Others that I also consider social networks that are bigger than most of these on the top 10 are:
Youtube - already have account there
flickr - same.
ping.fm - same.
blogger - same.
2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.
I felt I was very productive in getting know a lot of these new sites. There is still so much to learn and figure out each of their strengths and weaknesses. I came to see why facebook is so popular. it is very clean and user friendly. the ads are not very cluttering, unlike the lower half of the top 10.
3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.
One big thing that is very hard to overcome is getting sucked into these sites. Plus there are some unsavory characters who are on them. I noticed a few pedophiles and creepy guys. Most try to delete fake accounts, but some still slip through. I decided to create a new email account just for my social networking. Within 10 minutes of signing up on these sites I had 4 invites from girls from outside this country. Hopefully I can create filters to block a bunch of the junk I will get.
This is what I did for my personal project

Race for information
This week I was contacted by a friend from High School. She runs a couple dance classes down in Idaho Falls. At her last big dance, I happen to mention to her husband that I am studying marketing, specifically SEO and SMM. She wants me to help her design her website and better market herself to gain more business. This is some great news and I'm glad to help out. Even if I don't get paid for it, the experience is what I'm truly after. If I can work on this, plus the other projects... Tell you about that in a sec. I'll be able to have more experience to back me when I apply for the Disney Professional internship working on SMM. Or I could go anywhere with this under my belt.
To further my marketability as a marketer I did something last week that I thought would help. Already I've seen some possibilities. I joined the AMA (American Marketing Association) for this, my last semester. With a year subscription to a website full of helpful articles and a great network of contacts, I am sure to find employment in this competitive industry. The website lists a collection of marketing positions available right now. That alone cost me an hour of searching. That and filling out the profile on the career site that Laurie from the library showed us, helped tremendously in knowing what companies are looking for.
In the AMA, we will be working with a few local companies. One of which is "And Associates", who needs some marketing done in a better website design and possibly using Social Media to market the business. Although I fear that some things, such as legal business who write technical papers for others, seems worthy of Social Media, but That is one thing I am going to find out.
So to sum up this weeks activities:
1. Tasks completed---what did you do?
Joined AMA and looked at what companies are looking for.
2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.
I feel like I got closer to understanding what I need to learn on a day to day basis to better myself as a marketer.
3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.
I learned that companies (even Disney) look at the AMA card on your resume as to mean something. There are a lot of companies looking for talented people like me (mostly on the east coast). I learned the average salary for my type of position. This is going to help in negotiating salary with a future employer. Above all, experience speaks louder than degrees, but degrees with experience shout even louder!

New Rules
I wanted to post this as a template as well as a description of what we are doing. We got an email sent to us from Brother Bell. This is what it said:
So we need to have these three things done in both? Not exactly sure how we chart progress with our personal projects, but this is what I will be trying to accomplish. Here we go.
Dear Students,
A reminder to post two blogs (on the outside blog you set up) each week for both your personal and team projects ( first team blog would be due May 15th).
These are due Saturday midnight each week. Each blog for both your personal and team projects should include three items.
1. Tasks completed---what did you do?
2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.
3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.
The blogs/posts need to be long enough to be good.
Thanks
Bro. Bell

Link List
On Social Media Marketing.com, they go over a list of links of blog entries found on other sites. They compile the best of the week. This is a great compilation. Here's what I learned:
In the article, "What drives participation in a social network?" That answer is to feel validation. But the question you need to ask yourself is, what equals validation for your participation in SMM? Is it number of views, remarks, or likes? Knowing what is your validation for each type of SMM, you may better know how to track efficiency.
In the article, "Why It's Time to Hit the Reset Button on Trust" talks about how we sometimes blindly trust information posted in blogs and social media. We even repost it thinking it's fact without fact checking. We believe so many of our "friends" to be experts. Trust needs to be rethought.
From the article, "Language Translation and Social Media" I learned a new term for something I knew about for a long time. It's called Crowdsourcing. The idea has been around for a while and has even been used locally with places like the Paramount or even the Bookstore. The idea is to utilize the fan base to create content or other media for the support of the company. This is simply cheap advertising and it grows a sense of pride from the featured artist. It will still cost a bit, but most likely it's a great investment.
This is one amazing slide show. Just studying this would take a good week at least maybe even more:
In this last article, "Is location where it’s at in social networking?" I learned about location based technology in advertising. In other words, a company can send people ads, just because the person is standing in front of a library or other place. Some professors think it's a great idea, but they feel it may just die out quickly. Who knows what's in store for the future.
Like I said. This is an ever growing industry and hard to keep up. So much to read, so little time.

Personal Strategy Project Proposal
So our assignment was simply this:
Simple right? WRONG! My mind went to so many industries, but settled on marketing. I am studying marketing and specifically web marketing. Now finding a new brand in web marketing call "Social Media Marketing". SMM means you use more viral tactics to further your marketing power and brand awareness. I did a search to see which companies out there actually did this as a main part of their work. I found a "Top 10" list and have chosen the top two.
IntraPromote
SocialMediaMarketing.com
Like most of the companies in their industry, they are privately run, though they could be incorporated, so they won't show up on the NYSE or NASDAQ. But on a good note, they do show themselves prominently on their own blogs and post frequently to twitter and facebook.
First step for keeping up to date with these companies and the industry in general is to subscribe first to these companies' blogs and twitter feeds. Many companies have a weekly newsletter about SEO and SMM. I don;t think I will stop at just these two companies for that. Also in the comping weeks I will try to contact anyone in these companies to get a better feel for what it takes to be good at SMM. Contacted them through Linkedin.com and maybe even facebook.
Reading those article, tweets, blog entries and newsletters will keep me plenty busy, especially with an ever growing and changing marketing world.
Select Industry and two companies within industry to track and research. Determine what you could do to better yourself to be marketable to that industry/company. Put together a weekly plan.

What Management Is Part I
So I made the mistake of switching classes to another time. It's not a huge mistake, but it did make all homework that was due on Monday for me due tomorrow. This means I had to read 2 chapters and make this blog entry before 7:00. I can promise you, I would have had more insights had I had more time to prepare, but seeing that I... excuse excuse excuse. Here we go.
1. Role of Value Creation and Mgt
Value can be defined by so many people, but it needs to be created by all parties involved with the company. That includes the customers as well as those that work for it. Even investors. The management of resources effectively creates value.
2. What makes a strong Business Model
A business model that has a basic principle behind it allows for adaptability is the strongest. If you stray to far away from your original model people loose trust in you, like when a band changes its style of music. Another aspect of strong business models is that it it is unique enough to not be to far ahead of the curve but put into place those movements.
3. Key Principles of effective Strategy?
Positioning is one of the most prevalent key principles. Like it says in the book, there are some proverbial forks in the road that you have to choose and then stick with it.

Final Entry
It has bee a month since the end of class now and I wish to add one final entry. I will not be updating this blog or adding to it at anytime. I won't even be checking it very often. I would like to thank you for stumbling across this site and checking out the information found here. If you like what you see or if this has helped you at all I would ask that you click on my name on the bottom of this post. It doesn't cost you a thing, but it does help compensate me for my time I put into this project. Or if you like to make some money of your own just by referring people to a great site click on this picture ad.

Without doing anything... and I mean nothing at all. Somehow I made $90 over a year's time. Think what you could make if you did put some effort into it. Have a great day and thank you again for coming to this blog for information.
PS. If you have questions: I'm sorry, but I may not be able to get back to you in time for certain things. I wish I could answer all of your questions.
