This week I was contacted by a friend from High School. She runs a couple dance classes down in Idaho Falls. At her last big dance, I happen to mention to her husband that I am studying marketing, specifically SEO and SMM. She wants me to help her design her website and better market herself to gain more business. This is some great news and I'm glad to help out. Even if I don't get paid for it, the experience is what I'm truly after. If I can work on this, plus the other projects... Tell you about that in a sec. I'll be able to have more experience to back me when I apply for the Disney Professional internship working on SMM. Or I could go anywhere with this under my belt.
To further my marketability as a marketer I did something last week that I thought would help. Already I've seen some possibilities. I joined the AMA (American Marketing Association) for this, my last semester. With a year subscription to a website full of helpful articles and a great network of contacts, I am sure to find employment in this competitive industry. The website lists a collection of marketing positions available right now. That alone cost me an hour of searching. That and filling out the profile on the career site that Laurie from the library showed us, helped tremendously in knowing what companies are looking for.
In the AMA, we will be working with a few local companies. One of which is "And Associates", who needs some marketing done in a better website design and possibly using Social Media to market the business. Although I fear that some things, such as legal business who write technical papers for others, seems worthy of Social Media, but That is one thing I am going to find out.
So to sum up this weeks activities:
1. Tasks completed---what did you do?
Joined AMA and looked at what companies are looking for.
2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.
I feel like I got closer to understanding what I need to learn on a day to day basis to better myself as a marketer.
3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.
I learned that companies (even Disney) look at the AMA card on your resume as to mean something. There are a lot of companies looking for talented people like me (mostly on the east coast). I learned the average salary for my type of position. This is going to help in negotiating salary with a future employer. Above all, experience speaks louder than degrees, but degrees with experience shout even louder!

New Rules
I wanted to post this as a template as well as a description of what we are doing. We got an email sent to us from Brother Bell. This is what it said:
So we need to have these three things done in both? Not exactly sure how we chart progress with our personal projects, but this is what I will be trying to accomplish. Here we go.
Dear Students,
A reminder to post two blogs (on the outside blog you set up) each week for both your personal and team projects ( first team blog would be due May 15th).
These are due Saturday midnight each week. Each blog for both your personal and team projects should include three items.
1. Tasks completed---what did you do?
2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.
3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.
The blogs/posts need to be long enough to be good.
Thanks
Bro. Bell
