Would You Like to Take a Survey?

I didn't feel like this was a very productive week. We went over our survey questions that we came up. We now have a comprised list and I'm taking them to Brother Shiley to have them looked over for Tuesday's meeting. So with that being it, I don't feel like we accomplished much. I certainly didn't feel like I learned anything new. This next week will be better, but with the simple task of comprising a survey wasn't that effective in my eyes. Well That's really it. Nothing more. Minimal progress, no learning, and only few tasks, but all completed to the best of my abilities.

Networking with Marketing

This week was one amazing trip for my personal project. In our AMA (American Marketing Association) we had a mini networking dry run. In the meeting on Thursday, we had Elder Pothier there. It was nice to see him there, but I've seen him so many times and I never know what to say to him. We also had a guy from Policy Tech there and I've heard a lot about his company from previous classes. But the big one was James Zolman. He's an Internet marketer. He told us of what he does for a living. It sounded like a really tough job, but totally fun. James get's calls from companies each week asking him to work for them. So what ever he does, works well enough to be wanted by the companies that I'm interested in.

I started to follow him on Twitter and LinkedIn.com the moment he brought it up in the networking meeting. I'm very excited. He told a few of us about a weekly meeting with members of the community that meet on Tuesdays to talk about Internet Marketing. I'll be going this Tuesday to try it out. I'm going to be writing a lot of questions for them to answer.

Other than that, this week was filled with more videos on SEO and I'm learning more about what goes into making for good websites and what tools are used by the pro's. By using the tools and understanding them, I will soon become to Pro.

This is really helping my progress to become more employable, which really is my end goal. If I get employed by a big company doing SEO and SEM and SMM, I'll feel I did all this work and all of my classes in college were worth the time I put into them. I'll keep you informed as to what happens this week.

EXCITED!

Lessoned Learned: This is very possible to do. I had my doubts that this was "quick and easy money". Not likely at all. I'm glad to have learned that it took time and it takes some real hard work to make this type of marketing work. It's a lot of searching and finding out what's just right. We'll keep going, because it's worth the hard work.

RFinity Project Just Got Real!

1. Tasks completed---what did you do?

This week we had three meetings that were very useful to understanding our objectives. The first meeting was on Tuesday. There we talked about what we needed to accomplish over the scope of the project. At lease we thought that's what went on. We also went over deadlines and what was expected of us. Meeting two was short and Kyle and I spoke of what kinds of questions you ask in a survey to get what you need out of people. The third meeting was the best. We found out what RFinity is looking for in this project and better understood our roles. Some things changed from the way we viewed it. Kevin hadn't hammered out exactly what they wanted us to do by our meeting on Tuesday, so we now have a better idea of what needs to be done.

We were also too look at certain trends in the market of Facebook applications.

2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.

The meetings were great for information, but actual progress was done in research. I was given a research project of understanding the fundementals of Frases Diarias. It's one of the fastest growing apps on Facebook today.

3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.

What I learned about the app on Facebook is basically confirming prior knowledge. There is a large Latin community out there and by targeting only English speakers, you are neglecting a large chunk of the market that could influence your success. The app I studied was just that. It's a place for people to put quotes. that's it, but it's in Spanish. This is great information and lesson for later, but our demographic is the students of BYU-Idaho. I'm going to look into other apps for more info.

SEM for Facebook and Twitter

What an eventful and productive week?! I feel more ready to put SEM on my resume now than ever before.

1. Tasks completed---what did you do?

I got myself 2 (two) Lynda.com video series to learn from. The first was Social Media Marketing for Facebook & Twitter. And the second was Search Engine Optimization. I was able to finish the SMM in a matter of 2 (two hours). There was at least twice that much in time on the videos. I barely started the SEO series by the time I posted this, but I'll be able to finish that one soon. Probably talk about that one next week.

Also I got a bunch of great books on the matter. 101 Ways to Promote your Website, Facebook Marketing for Dummies, Social Media Marketing - An Hour a Day. Haven't been able to read any of those yet, but they look like the perfect books for this topic.

Also I've been introduced to many new a great sites and have bookmarked those pages for further reading. I just wish I had a smart phone where I could access most of these things on the go.

2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.

This has been probably the most productive week yet. I really felt I accomplished things and learned information worth while. The lessons learned this week from the videos make me feel like I can start getting the experience to back the knowledge I've gained.

3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.

First off I have to say, this isn't the most pertinent lesson learned but it has helped in my learning process. With the use of VLC player, I can watch almost any type of video. Also on top of that I can speed the video up by pressing the "]" key. As I mentioned I was able to watch the videos in one series in 2 (two) hours. The reason is, I sped up the video to 2x the normal speed. It's amazing how much information is still understandable and how many ums and pauses don't take up so much time when you're going twice as fast.

I learned some amazing things in regards to Facebook and Twitter. Facebook pages for businesses do not need a personal account associated with them. People are 6x more likely to retweet (RT) if there is a call to action listed in there. For instance, "Please help me find a better..." or "Check out this..." There are some great privacy and controls in place on the social networks to prevent people from spamming and creating a bad experience for users.

I highly recommend getting those Lynda.com tutorial videos. they really do put out a great series of information. I actually used them to understand html better than listening to my teacher in CIT 230.

Rfinity v. Personal Project

This week we got our assignments and groups for the E Center projects. I was overjoyed. I get to be working with Rfinity on social media marketing. Although I signed a non-disclosure form, I better find out exactly what I can and cannot explain here in this blog.

1. Tasks completed---what did you do?

So to help myself and Rfinity, I went out on a search for the top social networks and signed up for them. This took longer than I was expecting. First thing I did was to find a top listing. I found the top ten of 2010.So in order they ranked as such, and what I had to do on each.

1. Facebook - nothing, I was already signed up.
2. Myspace - same as facebook.
3. Bebo - same as facebook.
4. Friendster - register, confirm email, upload picture and find friends.
5. Hi5 - same as Friendster.
6. Orkut - same as facebook.
7. Perfspot - never heard of this one, same as friendster.
8. Yahoo 360 - never really heard of this either, but same as facebook. I had created profiles with my yahoo accoutn before they went social.
9. Zorpia - never heard of this one, same as friendster.
10. Netlog - never heard of this one, same as friendster.

Others that I also consider social networks that are bigger than most of these on the top 10 are:

Youtube - already have account there
flickr - same.
ping.fm - same.
blogger - same.

2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.

I felt I was very productive in getting know a lot of these new sites. There is still so much to learn and figure out each of their strengths and weaknesses. I came to see why facebook is so popular. it is very clean and user friendly. the ads are not very cluttering, unlike the lower half of the top 10.

There has been a page made on google docs so we all can contribute to the pot of information. I was the only one outside the intern, to make any comments or updates. I posted the powerpoint that I posted last week on here and also some key findings from this weeks personal and business project. I hope to find more for them before Tuesday at 2.

3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.

One big thing that is very hard to overcome is getting sucked into these sites. Plus there are some unsavory characters who are on them. I noticed a few pedophiles and creepy guys. Most try to delete fake accounts, but some still slip through. I decided to create a new email account just for my social networking. Within 10 minutes of signing up on these sites I had 4 invites from girls from outside this country. Hopefully I can create filters to block a bunch of the junk I will get.

This is what I did for the business project. This is going to be fun, working hand in hand with my personal project. This business project is going to give me the experience I need and want to push me to where I need to go. They are just so similar. So I will be going above and beyond.

Race for information

This week I was contacted by a friend from High School. She runs a couple dance classes down in Idaho Falls. At her last big dance, I happen to mention to her husband that I am studying marketing, specifically SEO and SMM. She wants me to help her design her website and better market herself to gain more business. This is some great news and I'm glad to help out. Even if I don't get paid for it, the experience is what I'm truly after. If I can work on this, plus the other projects... Tell you about that in a sec. I'll be able to have more experience to back me when I apply for the Disney Professional internship working on SMM. Or I could go anywhere with this under my belt.

To further my marketability as a marketer I did something last week that I thought would help. Already I've seen some possibilities. I joined the AMA (American Marketing Association) for this, my last semester. With a year subscription to a website full of helpful articles and a great network of contacts, I am sure to find employment in this competitive industry. The website lists a collection of marketing positions available right now. That alone cost me an hour of searching. That and filling out the profile on the career site that Laurie from the library showed us, helped tremendously in knowing what companies are looking for.

In the AMA, we will be working with a few local companies. One of which is "And Associates", who needs some marketing done in a better website design and possibly using Social Media to market the business. Although I fear that some things, such as legal business who write technical papers for others, seems worthy of Social Media, but That is one thing I am going to find out.

So to sum up this weeks activities:

1. Tasks completed---what did you do?

Joined AMA and looked at what companies are looking for.

2. Progress made---write about how productive you were for the week in regards to your projects.

I feel like I got closer to understanding what I need to learn on a day to day basis to better myself as a marketer.

3. Lessons Learned---time to reflect on what you are learning through the projects.

I learned that companies (even Disney) look at the AMA card on your resume as to mean something. There are a lot of companies looking for talented people like me (mostly on the east coast). I learned the average salary for my type of position. This is going to help in negotiating salary with a future employer. Above all, experience speaks louder than degrees, but degrees with experience shout even louder!
